Lums Pond Triathlon : Bear, Delaware
The event stages Sprint and Olympic triathlons out of Lums Pond State Park. Races use the park’s 200 acre freshwater pond for the swim, flat paved roads for the bike, and shaded forested trails and gravel walking paths for the run. The pond averages about 10 feet in depth and typically has water temperatures in the mid 70s on race day; the swim courses are rectangular with orange sighting buoys roughly every 75 meters and yellow triangles marking turns. The swim start and finish areas are wide open and suitable for spectating.
Bike courses are flat with consistently good pavement and all right-hand turns; Olympic athletes complete multiple loops around the park while Sprint athletes complete a single loop to reach the advertised bike distance. Run courses follow shaded single-track and wider gravel paths; aid stations are placed about every mile offering ice water and Gatorade. Post-race provisions include food and music at the lake.
Race categories include Overall, Masters Overall, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena, and Relay Teams, with scoring three deep. The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned and requires either a current membership or purchase of a one-day license. Packet pickup is available at the race site on the day before and on race morning; photo ID is required to collect materials.
