Event overview

The Lums Pond Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Lums Pond State Park, 1068 Howell School Rd, Bear, DE 19701. The festival offers Sprint and Olympic distance individual races, aquabike divisions, and relay teams (2 or 3 people). Events are open to athletes age 12 and older. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and serves as the Delaware State Championships for both Sprint and Olympic distances, with qualification spots for the Toyota Age Group National Championships.

Distances

  • Olympic: 1.5 km swim, 23 mi bike, 10 km run
  • Olympic Aquabike: 1.5 km swim, 23 mi bike
  • Olympic Relay: same distances, team entry (2-3 people)
  • Sprint: 750 m swim, 10 mi bike, 5 km run
  • Sprint Aquabike: 750 m swim, 10 mi bike
  • Sprint Relay: same distances, team entry (2-3 people)

Course and rules

The swim is a freshwater rectangular course that parallels the shore for the first 250 m. The Olympic course uses multiple loops (2-loop swim, 3-loop bike - do not re-enter the park until finishing, 2-loop run); the Sprint uses single loops for swim, bike, and run. The bike course is flat with right-hand turns and continuous pavement; the run follows mixed single-track and graveled walking paths through forested areas. Swim starts use a time trial format with two athletes started every few seconds; an Elite Box Start is available to athletes positioned at the front of the swim start. State championship qualification is by placing in the respective distance state championship: top 35% or top five finishers in an age group, whichever is greater. State championships after June 1, 2025, may qualify for both 2025 and 2026 Toyota Age Group Nationals.

Registration benefits

Registered athletes receive a finisher medal, long-sleeved tech shirt, custom race socks, packet pickup reusable bag, timed results, age group awards, a post-race meal, finisher certificate, and free finish-line photos. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
