Lums Pond Triathlon
The event is staged at Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware and offers Olympic and Sprint triathlon options. The swim takes place in the park’s 200 acre pond, which averages about 10 feet in depth. Both Sprint and Olympic swim courses use rectangular layouts with orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters and yellow triangles marking turns. Organizers publish a preliminary water temperature prior to race day; typical temperatures are expected to be in the mid 70s.
The bike courses are flat with all right-hand turns and smooth pavement. Olympic athletes complete three 6.7 mile loops for a total of 23 miles; Sprint athletes complete one 6.7 mile loop for just over 10 miles. The run courses use heavily forested, shaded paths and wide graveled walking trails. Aid stations are located about every mile and provide ice water and Gatorade.
Event administration and services include USA Triathlon sanctioning, timing and photos, packet pickup, race shirts and socks, finisher medals, post-race food and music, and multiple race categories such as Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena, Relay, Overall and Masters. Registrations are non-refundable; race deferrals and registration insurance are available. Packet pickup requires photo ID and is available at the race site on the day before and on race morning. The park speed limit of 25 mph is strictly enforced. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
