Lums Pond Triathlon
The event is staged out of Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware, at 1068 Howell School Rd, minutes from I-95. The festival offers Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons, aquabike options, and relay entries that consist of two or three members.
The swim takes place in freshwater on a rectangular course that parallels the shore for the first 250 meters. The bike is a large loop around the park described as completely flat with all right turns and consistent pavement. The run follows a mix of single track with lake views and wider graveled walking paths through heavily forested areas. The park provides mountain biking, hiking, and running trails and includes on-site attractions such as the GoApe ropes course; Stewarts Brewing Company is nearby.
Distances for the main race formats include:
- Olympic: 1.5K swim; 23 mile bike; 10K run
- Olympic aquabike: 1.5K swim; 23 mile bike
- Sprint: 750 meter swim; 10 mile bike; 5K run
- Sprint aquabike: 750 meter swim; 10 mile bike
The Lum's Pond Sprint and Olympic Triathlons are the USA Triathlon Delaware State Championships and serve as qualifiers for the Toyota Age Group Nationals. State championships will qualify the top 35 percent or the top five finishers in an age group, whichever is greater. Athletes do not have to be residents of a state to win that state’s championship. High school athletes who finish any State High School Championship will automatically qualify for Sprint-distance nationals provided they meet the stated age requirement.
