Loughrigg Fell Race
The Loughrigg Fell Race is an early season evening event held in Ambleside. The course covers a distance of 6.4 km (approx. 4 miles) and includes 330 metres of ascent. This out and back route takes participants from Rothay Park to the summit of Loughrigg and back.
The race starts with a crossing over a bridge to exit the park. Participants then traverse a cattle grid and begin a steep climb on a tarmac road before the terrain transitions to a gravel track. Following a gradual ascent through several gates on a bridleway, the route makes a sharp right turn onto the fell. The fell section features a series of short climbs combined with flatter stretches, leading to a pitched path and a final scramble up to the summit cairn. The return leg follows the same path back to the finish at Rothay Park.
The fell section of the course is flagged to assist with navigation. Due to the marked nature of the route and its length, runners are not required to carry a map, compass, or emergency food. However, all participants must comply with FRA safety requirements and carry specific kit, including a whistle, hat, gloves, and a waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams. A kit check is performed before race numbers are issued.
The event is open to individuals aged 16 or older. Younger participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or provide a signed parental consent form. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
