Loughrigg Fell Race

Loughrigg Fell Race is an early-season evening fell race starting and finishing at Rothay Park in Ambleside. The route is an out-and-back that reaches a summit cairn and returns along the same line.

Distances

  • 4 miles / 1080 feet
  • 6.4 km / 330 metres

The course leaves the park across a bridge and a cattle grid before a steep climb up a tarmac road that soon levels into a gravel track. Runners continue on a bridleway, pass through two gates, then take a final gate and a sharp right onto the open fell. The route includes several short steep climbs, runnable stretches, a pitched path to summit view, and a short scramble up rock to the summit cairn, followed by a return to Rothay Park.

Entry is by pre-entry on SI entries from March 2026. Entry fees are listed as £7 for FRA members and £9 for non-FRA members. Participants must be 15 years old by 31/12/2026 to take part. The event refers to the Fell Running Association safety requirements for participants.

Recent editions have attracted fields of over one hundred runners, with 178 entries recorded in 2025 and up to 269 in 2019. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
