Trail Running in Central Pennsylvania
The Lost Turkey Trail Races take place in the ridges and valleys of Central Pennsylvania, utilizing a variety of trail types. Participants encounter a mix of single-track sections and double-track paths throughout the courses. The event features multiple distance options:
- 50k: A point-to-point race traversing the southern portion of the Allegheny Front and finishing at the top of Blue Knob.
- Half-Marathon: A loop-style course.
- 10k(ish): Also known as the Little Turkey.
The point-to-point 50k course traverses varied terrain, including climbs and descents along the Allegheny Front. Transportation for the 50k event is available from Chappells Field to the start line in Windber.
The event is organized by RunHikePlay, Inc., a volunteer-led non-profit organization. Net proceeds are distributed to several groups, including Friends of Shawnee, Blue Knob State Park, and the Bedford County Amateur Radio Society. The races are Trail Sisters Approved, which includes a commitment to equal podium spots, equal prize money, women-specific apparel, and the provision of menstrual products at aid stations.
