Lost In The Woods : Nicollet, MN
Lost In The Woods is an off trail, navigational race held in Nicollet, Minnesota. The event is a 25 Miler made up of five identical unmarked loops of 5.00 miles each, all contained within the Swan Lake Wildlife Management Area - North Star Unit. Each loop has a net elevation gain of 0 feet according to the organizer.
The format requires navigation and search. Organizers send a map and course directions the day before the race; the course itself will not be marked. Runners must locate hidden books on the prescribed route and tear out the page that matches their bib. To record progress and continue, a runner must complete a loop under the time cutoff with all required pages. Completing five loops within the cutoffs constitutes an official finish. Participants may stop after any completed loop.
The terrain is mostly off trail or on deer trails. Expect ticks, two creek crossings per loop, downed trees, grass, rocks, underbrush, nettles and thorny plants. Organizers recommend clothing that covers skin; goggles are optional. Competitors should bring a compass and know basic navigation skills. The distance of each loop is exact even if GPS readings differ.
