Longest Dam Race : Fort Peck, MT
The Longest Dam Race takes place on and around the Fort Peck Dam with all events finishing at Kiwanis Park. The program includes running, walking, a one-mile fun run/walk, and a novice bike race that use dam-top roads, a gravel slope, and local trails.
- 10K Run - 6.2 miles
- 5K Run - 3.1 miles
- 5K Walk Only - 3.1 miles
- 1 Mile Run/Walk - 1 mile
- 10 Mile Novice Bike Race - 10 miles
The 10K starts at the top of Fort Peck Dam near the dam shaft houses on Highway 24 and crosses most of the dam before a 3.1 mile turnaround. After the turnaround the route descends about 350 ft on a gravel and dirt road, then returns to asphalt for roughly the final half mile into Kiwanis Park.
The 5K run and the 5K walk follow a similar route from the dam top, descending the same gravel slope and transitioning to pavement for the finish at Kiwanis Park.
The 10 mile novice bike race uses the same dam start, turns at the Invasive Species information sign, returns across the dam, and continues down Power House Hill to Kiwanis Park. Helmets are mandatory for cyclists, flip flops are not permitted, and participants are responsible for bringing their own bicycles and for pedestrian safety while obeying bicycle rules. Pets are not allowed.
The 1 mile run and walk begin in the group camping area at the back of the Downstream Camp Ground near the Bass Fishing Pond, follow the Nature Trail out to an open field, and finish at the Kiwanis Amphitheater. Buses will transport participants to the starting area because personal vehicles are not allowed into the group site; participants may also walk or ride bikes to the starting area.
