Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K
The Lincoln Tunnel Challenge is a USATF certified 5 km (3.1 miles) race that spans two states, New Jersey and New York. The event is unique as the course takes place mostly underwater through the Lincoln Tunnel. The race is held rain or shine, with both the start and finish lines located at the toll booths in Weehawken, New Jersey. Participants run through the tunnel to the New York City side, where they reach a cone turnaround before returning to the finish area in New Jersey.
Participants can choose from different registration categories based on their expected pace:
- 5 km Runner (timed for those finishing in under 30 minutes)
- 5 km Runner (timed for those finishing in over 30 minutes)
- 5 km Walker (not officially timed)
For safety and logistics within the tunnel, runners in the faster heat who do not finish within 30 minutes are picked up by a support vehicle and transported back to the finish area.
Standard registration includes a race t-shirt and a chipped bib for timed participants. Awards are presented to the first place overall male and female runners, as well as age group medals for the top three male and female finishers in various categories ranging from 9 and under to 85 and above. The event serves as a fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey, supporting sports training and health screenings for athletes and Unified partners.
