Lazy A Backyard Ultra : Udall, KS
The Lazy A Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing endurance running event held in Udall, Kansas. Participants run repeated laps of a fixed distance and continue until only one runner completes an extra lap beyond all others.
Each lap is 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers) and counts as one "Yard." Runners must complete every lap within one hour; laps begin on the hour and runners who fail to start exactly on time are eliminated. The 4.167 mile lap distance means 24 laps equals 100 miles.
Common aid stations are provided on course; runners must complete laps without personal pacing on the course. Crew support is allowed only between laps at the start/finish area. Runners are responsible for carrying appropriate hydration and for monitoring their own physical condition and fueling. Organizers may remove a runner who is deemed unfit to continue.
The course uses public roadways; runners should run on the left and be prepared to wear reflective clothing and carry a light or headlamp after dark. Dogs are requested to be left at home.
Finishing and recognition: the last runner to complete a solo final lap is declared the winner. All other entrants receive a Did Not Finish designation on the event page that will show total miles accumulated rather than a race DNF. All participants receive a bib, t-shirt, and a custom medallion marking Yards completed. First place male, female, and non-binary winners receive free entry for the next year plus a Lazy A railroad spike knife. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
