Event overview
The Lazy A Backyard Ultra takes place in Udall, KS, at 1868 E 60th Ave N on May 9, 2026. The event uses the backyard ultra format, where runners complete repeated laps until only one runner completes an extra lap beyond all others.
Format and rules
Each lap is 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers); one completed lap is counted as one Yard. Runners must complete each lap within one hour. Laps begin every hour on the hour, and failing to start a lap on time results in elimination. The race continues until a single runner completes one more lap than all others. If no runner completes an additional lap beyond the others, there is no winner.
Runners must complete laps without personal aid while on course; common aid stations are provided. Crew support is allowed only between laps at the start/finish area. Runners are responsible for their hydration and fueling. Organizers may intervene if a runner is deemed unfit to continue.
Course rules require runners to run on public roadways on the left and to wear a reflective or light vest and carry a light or headlamp after dark. Dogs are not allowed on the course.
Registration and awards
Registration opens on January 1, 2026. All participants receive a bib, t-shirt, and a custom medallion showing Yards completed. Winners in the male, female, and non-binary categories receive free entry into the next year’s race and a Lazy A railroad spike knife.
