Last Stand 1776 Backyard Ultra
The Last Stand 1776 Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held in Midlothian, Virginia, at Midlothian Middle School. The race takes place near Loch Lothian and serves as a celebration of Flag Day and the 250th birthday of the United States. This event follows the traditional backyard ultra format, focusing on mental fortitude and strategy rather than speed.
Participants must complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour. Runners who fail to be at the starting line when the new hour begins or fail to finish the loop within the allotted 60 hour are eliminated from the competition. The race continues until only one runner remains to complete a final solo loop.
Runners can set personal milestones based on the number of loops completed:
- 7 loops: Marathon distance
- 8 loops: 50 km
- 13 loops: 50 miles
- 15 loops: 100 km
- 24 loops: 100 miles
The event proceeds support the Semper Fi Fund, which provides resources for wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and their families. Each participant receives a runner shirt featuring the U.S. Army logo and the American flag. The course allows runners to experience the Virginia scenery while testing their physical and mental limits in a community-focused environment.
