Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain running event held at Friend Park Campground in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, Wyoming. It offers three formats: a 24-hour event in which participants complete as many summit laps as possible within a 24-hour period, a 12-hour challenge with a rolling start window, and a single-summit option that includes one ascent and descent.
The route ascends from Friend Park through dense pine, rocky mule deer paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops, topping out near 10,000 feet with sweeping views over the Laramie Range. A lap is about 9 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of vertical gain and loss. The course is rugged, technical, steep, and remote; runners should be prepared for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather.
Basecamp at Friend Park Campground serves as the event hub and the only aid station on course, providing water, electrolytes, soda, coffee, fresh fruit, snacks, made-to-order hot food, fire pits (subject to fire restrictions), drop-bag space, and crew access. On-site medical coverage is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department.
The event partners with the Warrior Trail Foundation, which uses trail running and fast-packing as part of programs to support veterans and their families by providing resources, coaching, and community connections.
Recommended equipment includes a running vest with 1.5–2 liters capacity, warm layers, rain or wind protection, a reliable headlamp with spare batteries, trail shoes with rock traction, trekking poles, and basic emergency and blister care. Nutrition guidance suggests planning for roughly 200–300 calories per hour and practicing planned nutrition and gear before race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
