Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain running event based at Friend Park Campground in Douglas, Wyoming, within Medicine Bow National Forest. The main options are a 24 hour event that counts full summit laps, a 12 hour challenge with flexible start timing, and a single summit option for one ascent and descent. A lap is about 9 miles with nearly 3,000 feet of vertical gain and loss, and the route rises to near 10,000 feet through pine forest, rocky paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops.
Basecamp at Friend Park Campground serves as the hub and the only aid station on course. Aid station provisions include water, electrolytes and coffee; fresh fruit, sweets and salty snacks; made to order hot food such as burgers, pancakes and grilled quesadillas; fire pits when permitted; drop bag space; and crew access. On-site medical coverage is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department.
The event notes a partnership with the Warrior Trail Foundation, an organization that uses trail running and fast packing as part of veteran support programs. Runners are advised to prepare for high altitude, rapidly changing mountain weather, and significant elevation change. Recommended gear includes a hydration pack, warm layers, a reliable headlamp with backup, trail shoes with rock traction, trekking poles, and emergency shelter.
