Event Overview

The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a trail running event on July 11, 2026. It begins and ends at the Friend Park Campground in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, Wyoming. The event supports the Warrior Trail Foundation, an organization that uses trail running and fast-packing as recreational therapy for veterans and their families.

Events and Distances

Participants can choose from three event formats:

  • 24-Hour Mountain Endurance Challenge: A timed event to complete as many summit laps as possible within 24 hours.
  • 12-Hour Challenge: A timed event with a rolling start window.
  • Single Summit Challenge: A one-time ascent and descent of Laramie Peak with a rolling start window.

The Course

The route climbs through the Medicine Bow National Forest, featuring dense pine forests, rocky paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops. The course is described as rugged, technical, steep, and remote, reaching an elevation near 10,000 feet at the summit. Each full lap to the summit and back is approximately 9 miles with about 3,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. Runners should prepare for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather.

Aid and Support

The Basecamp Aid Station at Friend Park Campground is the only aid station on the course. It will provide water, electrolytes, soda, coffee, fruit, snacks, and made-to-order hot food like burgers and pancakes. Fire pits for warmth and drop-bag space will be available, subject to fire bans. On-site medical support is provided by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department.

Recommended Gear

Strongly recommended gear includes a running vest or pack with 1.5–2 liters of water capacity, high-calorie food, a windproof/waterproof jacket, warm layers for overnight, a reliable headlamp with extra batteries, trail shoes with good traction, and trekking poles. Runners are advised to plan their nutrition, aiming for 200–300 calories per hour, and to use the aid station as supplemental fuel. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
