Laich o' Moray 30 and 50 mile challenge walks
The Laich o' Moray Challenge offers two circular long-distance routes with time limits of 14 hours for the 30 mile walk and 24 hours for the 50 mile walk.
- 30 miles - time limit 14 hours
- 50 miles - time limit 24 hours
Both routes share the first 16 miles to Roseisle. At Roseisle the 30 mile route heads south to the Heldon Hill ridge via Alves VH and then rejoins the 50 mile route for the final section. The full 50 mile route continues from Lossiemouth along a disused railway line and minor roads to Elgin, follows the River Lossie to the city outskirts, crosses the A96, passes through further woodland to Miltonduff Village Hall and then through forestry to gain the Heldon Hill ridge. The routes stay high to the Califer viewpoint before returning south-west to Rafford Village Hall.
The start and finish location is Rafford Village Hall (grid ref NJ067556, W3W ///paper.dozen.blackouts); the start point is new for this year. The route passes Dava Way, Dallas Dhu, Sueno's Stone, Findhorn and beach and coastal paths at Roseisle and Lossiemouth. The event date is chosen with tide times in mind so beach sections can be walked in daylight without getting feet wet.
This LDWA challenge is aimed at experienced long distance walkers and runners; entrants for the 50 mile event are expected to have recently completed walks over 25 miles. Booking is by SiEntries only; combined events are limited to 100 places. Entrance fees for 2026 are: 30 mile £35 for LDWA members and £50 for non-members; 50 mile £45 for LDWA members and £60 for non-members. OS Explorer map 423 covers the route; GPX files, route descriptions and a participant information pack are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
