Laich o' Moray 30 and 50 mile challenge walks
The Laich o' Moray event comprises two circular challenge walks of long distance, run by the North of Scotland LDWA. Routes share the first section to Roseisle, then diverge and rejoin on the Heldon Hill ridge. Time limits apply to each distance.
- 30 miles - circular route, 14 hour time limit
- 50 miles - circular route, 24 hour time limit
The start and finish location is Rafford Village Hall (grid ref NJ067556). The route uses woodland tracks to connect with the Dava Way toward Forres, passes Dallas Dhu Distillery and local community woods, then leaves the town at Sueno's Stone. It continues via Findhorn and follows coastal and beach paths to Roseisle and Lossiemouth. The longer route uses a disused railway line and minor roads to Elgin, follows the River Lossie, crosses the A96, passes through Quarrel Woods and forestry, then reaches the Heldon Hill ridge and the Califer viewpoint before returning to Rafford.
The event is for experienced long distance walkers and runners; candidates for the 50 mile challenge should have recently completed walks over 25 miles. Entry is via the SiEntries booking system and combined places are limited to 100. Maps, GPX files and route descriptions for 2026 are available. Camping is permitted on the adjacent playing field with access to the village hall toilets; there are no showers. The 50 mile event qualifies for the Annual 100 mile challenge.
