About the race
The Knock ME Down Challenge is a 35km multi-disciplinary event starting and finishing at Newcastle GAA Hall, Newcastle, Co. Tipperary (E91 W324). The course combines cycling, running or walking, and kayaking on a marked route that uses roads and forestry tracks.
The event sequence covers:
- 15km cycle from Newcastle to Kilballyboy Wood car park
- 2.5km run/walk to Baylough
- 0.5km kayak around Baylough
- 2.5km return run/walk to Kilballyboy Wood
- 15km cycle back to Newcastle
All kayak equipment and safety gear are provided at the lake, and trained guides and river rescue are on standby. Kayaks used are single competitor craft. There are marshals and water stops at changeover points and a dedicated pontoon at the lake to manage entry and exit.
Participants must provide their own roadworthy bike and wear a proper cycling helmet. Appropriate footwear is required; some competitors change shoes between running and cycling. Timing is recorded with disposable chips in race numbers and category is determined by birth date given at entry.
Facilities at the finish include changing and shower rooms at the GAA grounds and post event refreshments, weather permitting. Entry fees include kayak gear, trained safety cover, refreshments, a promotional T shirt, a backpack and a completion medal. Prize categories cover male and female winners and runners up across four age bands plus overall winners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
