Course highlights: The K50 is made up of an 18 mile out-and-back plus a 32 mile loop, with a nine mile climb to the rocky summit of Granite Peak. The K50 lists 11,100 feet of elevation gain and a 20 hour cutoff. The Long Walk 100K extends the K50 route to include the Granite Peak summit and additional aid stations; much of it is trail with minimal dirt road.
Other course notes: Granite Grinder follows the summit approach and single track trail. Sweet 50K notes about 7,000 feet of gain, aid stations near 10 and 14 miles, and a 12 hour cutoff. Tall Trees includes about 2,500 feet of vertical gain and an 8 hour cutoff. Herman's Half-ish is a point to point mostly downhill course with a 5 hour cutoff.
Ruck race rules and community impact: The memorial ruck relay uses the K50 course and requires a minimum packed weight of 35 lb for males and 25 lb for females. Ruck teams have a 20 hour limit. Proceeds benefit the SERE Memorial Fund, and the event has donated over 3,000 pounds of food to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank in Spokane. The SERE Beer Mile offers loaded and unloaded categories, requires beverage consumption within a 10 meter transition zone, and applies a penalty lap for failure to complete the beverage rules. Volunteers serve as sober drivers for competitors, and volunteering for the K50 or the ruck relay grants free entry to the Beer Mile. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
