Kaikōura Whale Run
The Kaikōura Whale Run is an annual community running event organised by Kaikōura Suburban School. Courses were redesigned in 2022 to include more off-road trail sections that pass through native bush, farmland, creeks and peninsula viewpoints beside the Seaward Kaikōura Ranges. The event records times and places for all competitors and operates with a traffic management plan on quiet country roads.
Facilities on course and at the school include portaloo toilets, drink stations, and post-race refreshments and stalls. The Marafun for preschool and early primary children is held off the road inside the school grounds with fun obstacles.
Event categories and standard entry fees:
- 1/2 Marathon run or walk : $95
- 12 km run or walk : $75
- 5 km run or walk (hybrid) : $55
- Marafun for children 8 years and under : $15
Race rules require competitors to wear their race number on the chest for timing, follow the course briefing and officials’ directions, keep to the left of the road unless directed, and note that entries are not transferable. The organisers state that refunds will not be given if major road closures occur due to factors beyond their control. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
