The event description notes Juneteenth as a commemoration of June 19, 1865, when federal troops brought news of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation to people in Texas. It also mentions that Juneteenth became a federally recognized holiday in 2021 and that the 2.5 mile distance is linked to a campaign by a retired teacher, principal, and grandmother who walked that distance through multiple cities.
Children and families of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to attend. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
