James River Rush
The James River Rush is an urban adventure race held in Richmond that combines trail running, mountain biking, and whitewater paddling. The course starts and finishes at the 14th Street takeout upper lot at 325 South 14th Street and moves through the James River Park System into shaded woods and singletrack.
The event format includes individual entries and three-person teams. Teams consist of three people with each member completing one leg of the race: running, riding, or paddling. The primary advertised distance is 10 Miles for the James River Rush 2026 event.
Bikers traverse Northbank and Buttermilk singletrack with switchbacks, roots, creek crossings, and technical sections. The run follows gritty park trails through the heart of the James River Park System. The paddling leg descends Class III+ whitewater from Reedy to 14th, including named features such as Hollywood and Pipeline, and finishes on downtown river whitewater. A post-race gathering takes place at Riverside Outfitters.
The James River Outdoor Coalition hosts the race annually to raise funds for the James River Park System. The organizer is a Richmond nonprofit founded in 1997 that supports trail building, maintenance, park access, kiosks, volunteer projects, and education.
