About the race
The Jackson River Scenic Trail races take place at the Intervale Trailhead in Covington, Virginia. The event includes these distances:
- 26.2 Miles Full marathon
- 13.1 Miles Half marathon
- 10K 10 kilometer race
- 5K 5 kilometer race
The course follows a former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway bed along the Jackson River. The surface is smooth crushed gravel and the terrain is mostly flat with gentle rolling hills. The route passes rural communities, open fields, and wooded areas and provides river and mountain views; local wildlife may be seen along the way.
There are restrooms / port-a-johns and hydration stations along the course and at the start/finish. Stroller policies vary by distance: strollers are not allowed in some races, while strollers are permitted in the 5K with stroller participants placed at the back of the start line. The event does not offer refunds; race changes are allowed in some cases and may require payment of a fee difference at packet pick-up.
All finishers receive a commemorative finisher's medal. Unique awards are given to the top three male and female finishers of each race. Top three male and female finishers in each age group receive a certificate. Age groups are 12 and under, 13-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 plus. Awards are presented at the Intervale Trailhead 30 minutes after completion by the top three male and female finishers for each distance; awards will not be mailed.
Packet pick-up is scheduled Friday June 11 from noon to 8 pm at the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. Day-of packet pick-up begins at 6:30 am on race day. The event is rain or shine; severe weather notices will be posted through the event channels and may be sent by email if there is sufficient advance notice.
