IRONMAN Wales is a long-distance triathlon hosted in the seaside village of Tenby, located in Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom. The event is known for its significant spectator attendance and community integration in a destination nicknamed "Iron Town."
Course Details
The competition consists of three distinct segments held across the Pembrokeshire coastline and the town centre:
- Swim: A sunrise ocean swim takes place at North Beach in Tenby. The water temperature typically averages around 17 °C (63 °F).
- Bike: A hilly course that travels through the scenic countryside and along the coastline. It includes the Saundersfoot climb, an area known for high levels of roadside support.
- Run: A hilly course located in the town centre of Tenby. It features the iconic "zig-zag" ramp and is lined with spectators throughout the circuit.
Climate and Location
The event takes place in September with average high air temperatures reaching 11 °C (21 °F) and low temperatures around 3 °C (16 °F). The race start is traditionally marked by the performance of the Welsh anthem.
Recognition and Status
The event serves as a qualification race for the IRONMAN World Championship. It has received athlete recognition in global surveys, specifically ranking as the second most recommended race and second best bike course globally in 2024.
