About the race
The Iceland Volcano Marathon takes place in Mývatn, Iceland, a region known for its intense geothermal activity, including geysers and hot springs. The event offers participants the opportunity to run through a geological hotspot characterized by lava rock and volcanic craters.
The course features a variety of terrains, including soft black volcanic sand, plains of lava rock, and single-track trails. A central feature of the route is the massive Hverfjall crater, and the path also traverses several smaller volcano craters. Some sections of the course pass through areas that are typically off-limits to the general public.
Available distances include:
- 42.2 km
- 21.1 km
- 10.55 km
International participants are required to book a multi-day tour package to enter the race. This package typically includes several nights of accommodation, local transportation according to a set itinerary, and a guided highlights tour of the Mývatn area. For local residents of Iceland, entry-only options are available which provide a medal and a race shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
