Race Overview
The Iceland Volcano Marathon takes place in Mývatn, Iceland, a region known for its geothermal activity. The course is situated in a geological hotspot featuring geysers, hot springs, and lava rocks. Participants run through a landscape that includes the massive Hverfjall crater, which serves as a central point of the route.
The terrain consists of a variety of surfaces, including soft black volcanic sand, gravel, and single-track trails. Runners traverse plains of lava rock and pass by several minor volcano craters. Some sections of the course pass through areas that are typically off-limits to the general public.
Distances
Participants can choose from three different race distances:
- 42.2 km (Full Marathon)
- 21.1 km (Half Marathon)
- 10.55 km
Participation and Logistics
International participants are required to book a tour package to enter the marathon. For residents of Iceland, a local entry option is available which includes race access, a shirt, and a medal.
