About the race
The Ice Ultra is a 230 km self-sufficient ultra marathon across the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. The route is staged over five race stages completed across five days, with an event duration of seven days including transfers and base camp time. Terrain includes snowfields, Arctic tundra and frozen lakes, and one stage features a 15 km frozen lake called the Red Jersey Stage. Daytime temperatures reported range down to -40°C and daylight hours are limited to about eight hours.
Accommodation is in teepee tents and remote huts from base camp in Gällivare to the finish in Jokkmokk. Places are limited to 40 competitors. Runners must carry the mandatory kit list throughout the event; the race team carries competitors’ sleeping bags. Checkpoints are placed approximately every 10 km and provide a small shelter, a qualified medic and drinking water.
Camps offer drinking water and boiling water for freeze-dried meals. The event is supported by GPS tracking, manned checkpoints, medical teams and guides. Entry information lists a fee of £3,500 per athlete with the option to pay in four instalments, including an £875 deposit. Qualifying criteria require completion of a marathon-length event within 12 months of the race.
The entry fee covers transfers, luggage carriage, race accommodation, digital photos, a race T-shirt, a finisher medal and a donation to a woodland project. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
