Hyannis 1 Triathlon - Craigville Beach
The Hyannis 1 Triathlon is in its 45th season and is described as the longest-running triathlon in the East. The event is staged at Craigville Beach in Centerville, Town of Barnstable MA, near the bridge over the Cape Cod Canal.
Multiple race formats are offered on the same day, including sprint and Olympic triathlons plus duathlon, aquabike and aquathlon. Distances include:
- Sprint triathlon: 1/4 mile swim, 10.2 mile bike, 3.6 mile run
- Olympic triathlon: 0.9 mile swim, 20 mile bike, 6.2 mile run
- Duathlon: 1.4 mile run, 10.2 mile bike, 3.6 mile run
- Aquabike and aquathlon: swim and bike or swim and run options matching sprint or Olympic distances
Swims take place in Nantucket Sound with typical water temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s. Athletes remain within about 100 yards of shore; courses are lifeguarded and supported by safety boats. The Olympic swim includes a 30 minute cut-off for an early segment.
Bike courses are single loop routes that pass through Centerville, Osterville and Wianno and return along a shore road. Run courses lead toward Hyannisport and include gradual rolling grades with aid stations staffed by volunteers. Relay teams and multiple competitive divisions are available, including age group, elite, Clydesdale/Athena, first-timers, para triathletes and team relays. Awards are presented to top finishers in many divisions and results are posted within 24 hours. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
