Huron 5K Challenge Race Series
The Huron 5K Challenge Race Series is a community series made up of six separate 5K events held in and around Huron, Ohio. The series combines multiple local races into one season-long competition and channels proceeds to local schools, charities, and camp programs.
Series registration for all six races cost $100, which is lower than paying each race individually. Individual race fees were $20 for pre-registration and $25 on the day of each race. Across the series, total participation in one year reached approximately 1,300 runners, averaging about 216 participants per race.
Individual events in the series include the Huron River Run, Abbey Rose Color Run, Beulah Beach 5K, Huron PTO Glo Stick race, St. Peter Halloween Spooktacular, and the Judi Lively Memorial Thanksgiving Race. Course settings vary by event and include downtown streets, park areas such as Fabens Park, beachside sections at Nickel Plate Beach, and neighborhood routes. Race proceeds support causes tied to each event, including high school track and cross-country scholarships, Young Life of Erie County, Beulah Beach programming, the Abbey Rose Kudrin Foundation, supplemental educational materials for local schools, school tuition assistance, and the Judi Lively scholarship fund.
Awards for multi-race finishers have included sweatshirts for those finishing four or five series races and gift cards in addition to sweatshirts for those finishing all six. In one season, 21 participants completed four or more races and nine completed all six. Series sponsors have included local businesses and organizations.
