Homer Epic
The Homer Epic is a human-powered winter race held on marked trails in the Caribou Hills. Participants may ski, ride a fat bike, or run; the event offers two distance options:
- 50 km
- 100 km
Both routes start and end at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. The 50 km course is a loop out to Caribou Lake and back. The 100 km course includes an out-and-back on the North Fork Hills trail to a checkpoint before returning to the 50 km course. Elevation gain is listed as 2,409 ft for the 50 km route and 6,284 ft for the 100 km route. The field is capped at 150 participants and the race has a 24 hour time limit.
The trails are remote and many hours from help; navigation is the participant’s responsibility even though the course is marked. Weather permitting, some sections may be groomed by snowcat and suitable for skate skiing. Checkpoints provide water and snacks. The event is a fundraiser for the Homer Cycling Club.
Race rules include carrying required gear, no outside assistance outside official checkpoints, no e-bikes, and no dogs on course. Entrants must be 18 or older unless approved by the organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
