Homer Epic
The Homer Epic is a human powered winter race in the Caribou Hills offering two route options and three modes of travel. Participants may ski, ride a fat bike, or run, and may change their chosen mode up until the race start. The event is limited to 150 participants and serves as a fundraiser for the Homer Cycling Club. A groomed snowcat track may be provided when weather permits. The overall time limit for finishing is 24 hours.
Both routes start and end at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. Route details:
- 50 km loop to Caribou Lake and back.
- 100 km includes an out and back on the North Fork Hills trail then returns to the 50 km course.
Elevation gain is listed as 2,409 ft for the 50 km route and 6,284 ft for the 100 km route. The course is marked and official checkpoints offer water and snacks, but navigation is the competitor’s responsibility.
The race takes place on remote snow machine trails that are many hours from outside help, so self-sufficiency is required. Required gear includes a headlamp, rear flashing light, insulated water container (at least one quart), sufficient food, navigation tools, insulated windproof outer layers, and a fire starter. Recommended items include a helmet for bikers, a tracker device, extra clothing layers, emergency food, and basic repair tools.
Rules note key restrictions: no outside assistance outside checkpoints, no eBikes, no dogs on course, and entrants must be 18 or approved by the organizers. There are no refunds except a 50 percent refund policy if organizers cancel the event, with remaining funds applied to event expenses and club projects.
