Homer Epic
The Homer Epic is a human powered winter race held on marked trails in the Caribou Hills. The event offers two route options and allows participants to travel by ski, fat bike, or on foot; competitors may change mode before the race start. The field is capped at 150 participants and there is a 24 hour time limit for completion.
Both routes start and finish at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. The 50 km course is a loop out to Caribou Lake and back. The 100 km course adds an out and back on the North Fork Hills trail and then joins the 50 km loop. Elevation gain is listed as approximately 2,409 ft for the 50 km route and 6,284 ft for the 100 km route. The course may include a snowcat groomed section suitable for skate skiing when conditions allow.
Checkpoints are provided with water and snacks. The route is marked but navigation is the participant’s responsibility. The race takes place on remote trails many hours from help; participants must carry required gear and sufficient supplies and be self sufficient if stopped by weather or equipment issues.
Rules include a prohibition on outside assistance except at official checkpoints, no e bikes, and no dogs on course. The event is a fundraiser for the Homer Cycling Club. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
