Event overview

The Highland Fling Ultramarathon is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon on Saturday 29 August 2026. The route follows the southern section of the West Highland Way through Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, from Milngavie to Tyndrum. The distance is 53 miles (85 km) with total ascent of 2300 m and descent of 2100 m. Terrain is approximately 90% trail and 10% road. The route is waymarked and live chip timing is used.

On-course and finish facilities

The event operates a drop bag system with three food drop bags allowed. Free luggage transport is provided from the start to the finish. At the finish there are free showers, free home-made food and drinks, heated marquees, free post-race massage, and free official event photos. An afterparty takes place in a marquee (BYOB and donation bar). Event buses are available for travel to the start and from the finish for an additional cost.

Entry, eligibility and fees

Entries open 9 November 2025 and close 26 July 2026. Entry fee is £125. Minimum age is 20 on race day. Entry allocation uses an active gender entry system with initial places for women and men and an option to enter as nonbinary. To qualify for the 2026 race, entrants must have completed an ultramarathon, a road marathon (finish under 5 hours) or a trail marathon after 1 January 2024; applicants have until 1 June 2026 to meet this requirement.

Rules, refunds and inclusivity

External support and pacers are not allowed. Mandatory kit includes an emergency foil blanket, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, a headtorch and a charged mobile phone. Running poles are permitted from 7.5 miles (CP1 Beechtree). NSAID use on race day is forbidden. A 14 day cooling-off refund applies (minus a £5 fee); 50% refunds are available until 1 July 2026, with no refunds after that date. Deferrals are only for pregnancy or adoption.
