About the race
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Donna Peele Memorial 5k is the foundation’s annual 5K event, held on October 10, 2026 as the 23rd edition of the race. The event is presented in memory of a founding member who died of breast cancer in October 2023 and serves as one of the primary fundraisers for the foundation.
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation was founded in 2000 to provide direct assistance to local residents dealing with cancer. Assistance includes help with travel expenses, prescriptions, medical supplies, and medical bills not covered by insurance. Since its inception the foundation has provided grants totaling more than $1,000,000 and has assisted hundreds of island residents and their families.
The course follows a scenic route through a quiet soundside neighborhood of Kinnakeet Shores in Avon, North Carolina and is open to running, walking, or biking. Entry fees are $25 in advance and $30 on race day; children 12 and under are $15 and children in strollers are free. The event fee includes the HICF 5K T-shirt and awards. Participants are encouraged to wear pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
