Event overview

HELLS DELLS is an ultratrail event in Prescott, Arizona, centered at Watson Lake. The course is listed as 30.6 miles with about 3,300 ft of elevation gain and loss. The route is a single continuous loop with an added lollipop section that yields about 29.5 unique miles. The organizer describes the event as a low-support, local-style trail run created in memory of two dogs.

The race has an entry fee structure that includes a $20 registration charge with $15 returned at check-in, and a park entry fee of $3. Refunds are available minus the registration processing fee up to two weeks before the race.

Course and support

The terrain runs through the Granite Dells and includes extensive slick rock, technical trail sections, many intersections, and significant exposure to sun. The course contains steep and slow sections and is expected to take longer than a typical 50k for most participants.

There are two fully stocked aid stations located at roughly mile 10 and mile 20, plus a water drop at about mile 25.5 that includes a vault toilet and a water fountain. Cutoffs are: 3.5 hours to the first aid station (about 10 miles), 7 hours to the second aid station (around mile 20), and an overall race cutoff of 11 hours.

The organizer advises runners to be self-sufficient with fluids and calories, carry about two liters of water if not moving fast, and download the course to a GPS device because of frequent intersections and occasional flag tampering. Course intersections in the Dells will be marked with arrows and color-coded flags. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
