46. Harzquerung
The Harzquerung is a traditional long-distance sports event organized by the Ski-Klub Wernigerode 1911 e.V. Held annually on the last Saturday in April, the event offers various distances for both runners and hikers through the Harz mountain region. The routes connect the towns of Wernigerode, Benneckenstein, and Nordhausen, crossing diverse natural landscapes.
The event features several point-to-point courses:
- 54 km from Wernigerode to Nordhausen
- 31 km from Benneckenstein to Nordhausen
- 26 km from Wernigerode to Benneckenstein
The course profiles have been modified in recent years due to forest conditions and storm damage, often utilizing wider paths to ensure participant safety from falling branches or unstable ground. The routes include aid stations and beverage points distributed along the paths. Participants are responsible for navigating road crossings and adapting to the current terrain conditions, which may include uneven surfaces due to wildlife activity.
