The Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster
The Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster is a point-to-point walking and running event on 15 May 2027 that starts from Trehafod Community Village Hall in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf. The routes cross the Rhondda Valleys and combine forest tracks, moorland and valley viewpoints.
Participants choose between these distances:
- 26.5 miles
- 16 miles
Both routes begin with a climb through the forests of Mynydd y Glyn and then pass over Mynydd y Cymmer before they split. The longer route follows a revised line over moorland and through woods toward a glacial cwm with views of Bwlch y Clawdd, then returns via Ton Pentre and Ferndale. The shorter route descends to Dinas and then climbs toward Rhondda Golf Club with views over the two Rhondda Valleys. The routes rejoin for a final climb to the Tylorstown tip viewpoint before the last section back to the start.
Arrangements include tea and toast at the start, indoor and outdoor checkpoints with refreshments on both routes, and a hot meal at the end. All participants receive a certificate of completion.
Entries open on 1 October 2026 and close on 15 April 2027 or when spaces are full; a waiting list will be used. Minimum age is 18. Entry fees are listed as LDWA Member £20.00 and Non Member £25.00. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
