GutCheck Cape Cod
GutCheck Cape Cod is a point-to-point adventure race held in Nickerson State Park in Brewster, Massachusetts. The event combines running, cycling, navigation and water crossing, with competitors choosing to swim or paddleboard for water segments. The course varies each year and is revealed shortly before the race.
The race uses laminated maps with pre-marked checkpoints. Competitors navigate between checkpoints using map and compass, and must check in at all checkpoints and the finish together. Segments alternate between run, bike, and swim or paddle disciplines. There is no central transition area.
This event offers four race categories: solo, two-person, three-person and four-person teams. Teams remain together throughout the course; up to two teammates may share a paddleboard at a time. Expected finishing time is about 1 to 2 hours. Participants should be prepared for cold water, steep hills, cliffside trails with tree roots, and a cliff section that includes 92 built-in steps.
Typical segment distances and terrain include:
- Paddle 1 - 1.5 miles or Swim 0.5 - 1.0 miles
- Bike 5 - 10 miles with -5% to 8% grades
- Run 4 - 6 miles on technical trails up to 18% grade
The race is USA Triathlon sanctioned. A USAT annual or one-day license is required; the one-day license fee is $14.99. Recommended gear includes a road bike, helmet, paddleboard or swim gear, life vest or safe-swimmer buoy, dry bag, and trail-running shoes.
