Event overview
The Grills Trail Run is part of the WTAC Fall Trail Race Series (race 3 of 4) and takes place at Grills Preserve, 198 Bowling Lane, Westerly, RI. The event offers two timed trail events:
- 10 Mile
- 10K
Both events start and finish at Grills Preserve. Entries have tiered fees: early registration is $23 for adults and $18 for those 18 and under; regular registration increases to $30 adults and $25 for those 18 and under; race day registration is $35 adults and $30 for those 18 and under. Discounts apply: $5 off for WTAC members and $2 off for Mohegan Striders.
Course and logistics
Both courses showcase trails at Grills Preserve; the 10-mile course also goes into the Grills Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton and includes trails, bridges, and riverfront. The surface is roughly 80% single-track and 20% double-track. The race uses a mass simultaneous start with the course splitting at about one mile. The 10-mile course has a cut-off of 2 hours 30 minutes (15 minute/mile pace); beyond that time support and a recorded finishing time are not guaranteed.
Participants and volunteers must wear at least 200 square inches of orange per State of RI DEM mandate. Walkers are welcome but are asked to choose the 10K in consideration of volunteer time. No strollers or dogs are allowed on the course. Race timing is managed by the organizers rather than professional chip timing. Post-race food and refreshments, including a pizza truck, are provided for participants. Awards are given to overall male and female finishers and top finishers in each male and female age group.
