Great North Swimrun - Windermere

The Great North Swimrun takes place within the Lake District National Park at Lake Windermere, offering an off-road and open-water experience. Participants navigate a course that alternates between running on land and swimming in the lake, designed as an island-hopping adventure. A key rule of the event is that entrants must carry all their equipment from the start to the finish line, wearing or carrying both their running shoes and wetsuits throughout the entire duration.

Participants can choose between two primary distances:

  • SwimRun Short: A total of 12.6 km, consisting of 2 km of swimming and 9 km of running.
  • SwimRun: A total of 23.9 km, consisting of 3 km of swimming and 18 km of running.

The event provides several facilities and services, including a bag drop, toilets, changing rooms, and medical assistance. On-course support includes one aid station for the short distance and four feed stations for the longer distance. Every finisher receives a medal and a swim cap.

Specific kit requirements are in place for safety and identification. Mandatory items include a wetsuit and a provided race bib. Other permitted or recommended equipment includes goggles, tow ropes, hand paddles, compression socks, and pullbuoys. The minimum age for participation is 16 years for the short distance and 17 years for the full distance. While the short course has no cut-off times, the full SwimRun requires participants to reach Brathay Hall within four hours to continue.
