Trail and Wilderness Navigation in Santa Cruz
Go Wild Santa Cruz is a map-based adventure scramble located within the mixed forests and redwood groves of Harvey West Park. Participants navigate through meadows and wooded terrain to locate up to 20 different checkpoints using a custom-provided map. The event utilizes a 1:12,500 scale map with 5-meter elevation contours.
There are two primary duration options available for participants:
- 2 Hour Scramble
- 4 Hour Scramble
The event is designed for teams ranging from 1 to 5 people. Divisions are categorized by gender (Women, Men, and Mixed) and age, including Junior, Open, Masters (average age 40+), and Family. The format follows a point-based system where each checkpoint carries a different value based on its location and technical difficulty. Participants use a SportIdent "ePunch" timing chip to record their progress at blue timing stations placed throughout the course.
The event base is located at the Buckeye Picnic Area in Santa Cruz. Facilities include nearby restrooms and a socializing area with refreshments provided after the course. The terrain consists of both established trails and wilder off-trail sections. Participants are advised to wear closed-toed shoes with grippy tread due to the natural surface conditions.
The site is accessible via public transit from the San Jose Diridon Caltrain station using the Santa Cruz Metro Highway 17 Express bus, followed by a one-mile walk or bike ride from the downtown terminal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
