Geode Challenge Races
The Geode Challenge Races take place at Geode State Park in Danville, IA on October 17, 2026. The event offers trail distances over marked routes and raises funds for the Friends of Geode, supporting park projects including recent renovations to the beach concession building.
Available distances:
- 25K, double loop, about 15.5 miles
- 12K, single perimeter loop, about 7.75 miles
- 5K, out-and-back from the beach to Shelter 1
Trails include dirt single track, wider trail sections, large rock, small gravel, sand, mowed grass, short road sections, many hills, a creek crossing, and roughly 800 feet of vertical elevation per perimeter loop. Course markings use flags, ribbons and signs. Water and light snacks will be available at Shelter 1 and Shelter 4, and finish area water will be available for finishers and 25K runners to refill bottles or hydration vests. Dogs are allowed on course but must be leashed to avoid tripping other participants.
All finishers receive a geode. Handmade wood plaques with mounted geodes will be awarded to first place male and female in each distance. A separate Top Dog plaque is awarded to the first overall finisher in each distance running with a dog; those running with dogs are not eligible for the first place male or female plaques. The Friends of Geode may offer $100 prizes for single winners who beat specified course records. Online registration closes October 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT; on-site registration is available the morning of the event with higher fees and cash or check only.
