The race is held in memory of Gavin Tipper. Gavin was a long‑time member of DK Rugby Club and later coached children with Black Country Triathletes, Tipton Harriers and Halesowen cycling.

Action Heart is a cardiac rehabilitation charity that began a programme in Dudley in 1978. It has charitable status (registered number 518586) and is contracted to provide services by Dudley Health Authority. The Action Heart Centre is located in Block C at Russells Hall Hospital. The charity supports more than 700 patients at any one time on programmes of exercise and lifestyle management, with care lasting up to 12 months.
