Event Overview
The Galtee Challenge Duo Race is a mountain running event held in County Tipperary. Participants must enter and compete in pairs, with the final team time determined when the second member crosses the finish line. The course covers a distance of 29 km with a total ascent of 2300 m. This event is classified as extreme due to the significant elevation gain and the nature of the terrain.
Course Details
The race starts and finishes at King's Yard in Kilbehenny. The route is not marked, and participants are required to navigate through eight specific control points. These points can be reached in any sequence:
- Carrigeen (Monabrack)
- Cruach a Tarbh (Bull Hill)
- Booley Ruin
- Stile at the start of Temple Hill
- Temple Hill
- Lyracappul (Start of wall)
- Ice Road (Trail Post)
- Galty Mor (Trig Point)
While a suggested route map is provided, teams may choose their own lines between these locations. An aid station is located at control point 4.
Requirements and Equipment
As an advanced mountain race, mandatory Level C kit is required for all participants. This includes a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams, waterproof full leg cover, hat or buff, gloves, and a whistle. Runners must also carry a foil blanket or bivvy bag, a map of the area, a compass, emergency food, a charged mobile phone, and the means to carry at least 500 mL of water. GPS devices are permitted.
Facilities and Categories
The event hub at King's Yard provides parking with an honesty box system, toilets, and coin-operated showers. There are three competitive categories for teams: male, female, and mixed.
