Freedom Backyard Ultra Marathon (FBUM 2027)
Freedom Backyard Ultra Marathon is a Last Man Standing style backyard ultra held at the Missouri Freedom Camp in Bourbon, MO, at 5992 Highway C. The event uses a loop or out-and-back course that must measure 4 miles 880 feet (6.7056 kilometers) per lap, with the official loop described as 4.1 miles through undulating Midwest terrain.
The course includes rolling hills, creek crossings, fields, and short gravel road sections. About half the route is wooded and shaded during the day. Some trails are rocky or root covered and most wooded sections are technical. Trails are generally wide enough for UTVs. The corral is located at the barn next to the farmhouse, and the main aid station and other aid services are based at the barn. A small water point is available on course.
Race format and rules follow backyard ultra standards. Each Yard starts precisely one hour after the previous. Competitors must start at the bell and complete each Yard in less than an hour for it to count. Except for restroom breaks, runners may not leave the course during a Yard. No personal aid is allowed during a Yard, no non-competitors are permitted on course, and no artificial aids such as trekking poles are allowed. The winner is the last person to complete a Yard; all other participants are recorded by Yards completed. The race is open ended.
Onsite camping is available and hotels are about 15 minutes away in Sullivan, MO. Race shirts are provided to entrants who register before May 5. A pre-race dinner is held the night before at the Missouri Freedom Camp; family or crew plates require an extra purchase. There are no refunds and all proceeds are donated to the Freedom 13 organization, a project to develop recreational camps and housing for veterans, police officers, and their families.
