Berryman Trail Races

The Berryman Trail is an approximately 26.4-mile single-track loop through the Mark Twain National Forest that was designated a National Recreation Trail in 1980. The western half of the loop shares about 12 miles with the Ozark Trail. Over time the route grew from roughly 24 miles to the current 26.4-mile loop, which allows event distances without out-and-back sections.

The course is moderately technical with many roots and rocks. Total elevation gain and loss is about 2500 ft per loop. The route crosses multiple stream beds that may or may not contain water depending on recent rainfall. Brazil Creek is crossed twice near the aid station at mile 16 and is typically shin-deep; the same crossing occurs again at about mile 42 for second-loop runners. Aid stations are spaced roughly 4 to 6.5 miles apart, with an additional water-only station midway through the longest section.

The start and finish are at the shelter of the primitive Berryman Campground, which has no water or electricity. The campground uses pit toilets, charges $15 per night for camping, and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. A primitive, no-fee campground and aid station at Brazil Creek is about 6.5 miles away. Developed campgrounds and cabins are available near Huzzah Valley Resort and Bass River Resort, approximately 12 miles from the campground. Hotels are located in Potosi, Steelville, and Cuba at increasing distances from the start.

A US Forest Service Day Use Fee of $5 per day applies to campground and trailhead access and to overflow parking on Berryman Road. Parking along Berryman Road is limited to the northbound side only; unpaid access may be subject to citation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
