The Fit as a Firefighter 5K is a running and rucking event held in Waterfront Park, Medical Lake. The event takes place on April 26, 2026.
The event is designed as a practice opportunity for the wildland firefighter pack test. Participants can walk, run, or ruck a 5k distance. The firefighter qualification standard involves completing 3 miles in 45 minutes or less while carrying 45 lbs; a weighted vest or backpack is allowed for this. However, the event cannot serve as an official pack test due to verification complexities across different fire districts.
Entry for the general public costs $35. First responders can participate for free by requesting a coupon code via the contact method provided in the event information. Participants must provide their own pack or weighted vest. On the event day, packs and vests can be weighed during check-in.
Participants start in waves every 30 minutes. Faster participants are advised to attend the earlier heats between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. Slower participants or those wanting a walk are advised to attend after 10:00 AM. The event includes a warning that carrying weight significantly increases impact on bones and joints, and participants are responsible for their own safety and should have trained with weight beforehand.
