FIR 5K sponsored by Spectrum Health
The FIR 5K sponsored by Spectrum Health is the fourth annual community 5K walk and run held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail at Crane Avenue in Pittsfield. The event benefits the Berkshire Running Foundation’s FIR (Fitness In Recovery) program.
The FIR program offers a free, safe, sober and supportive environment for people who want to introduce fitness into their lives. Organizers present the program as helpful for individuals dealing with substance abuse, anxiety, depression, grief, eating issues, and for caregivers of people in recovery. The Berkshire Running Foundation is launching this program in partnership with a local hospital, a rehabilitation center, and community centers.
The program uses the Lemme Run curriculum and runs for six week with the goal of completing a 5K. Each participant is assigned an experienced coach for guidance during training. After finishing the program, participants are encouraged to continue training and to consider becoming coaches themselves. Organizers note that adding exercise to a recovery plan supports physical improvement, social engagement, and recovery efforts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
