Fallen Soldiers 5K (WIU)
The Fallen Soldiers 5K is an annual run/walk hosted by Western Illinois University on October 10, 2026, that raises funds for the WIU Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports veterans and service members who are currently enrolled at Western. A memorial program is held before the race to honor the fallen soldiers for whom the fund was established and to recognize current scholarship recipients.
The event typically draws 400 to 500 participants to the WIU campus and offers both on site and virtual participation options. Distances available include:
- 5K
- 1 mile
- Virtual race option
Registration fees and deadlines are published in advance. Fee categories listed for this edition include a student race fee of $10, a regular race fee of $30, and a virtual race fee of $40, with a registration deadline that guarantees a shirt if met. Packet pick-up and late registration occur at the Spencer Student Recreation Center, with additional packet availability the day before the event.
A route map is provided for participants, and race results and event photos from prior years are maintained. Proceeds from the event go directly to the scholarship fund, and sponsorship opportunities are available to underwrite event costs and support the fund. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
