Event Overview
The Extraterrestrial Full Moon takes place in Rachel, Nevada, along the Extraterrestrial Highway (Highway 375). This location is situated on the fringe of Area 51 and was officially named by the federal government in 1996 due to the high frequency of reported UFO sightings in the area. The event occurs on the weekend closest to the full moon, allowing participants to experience the transition from twilight into night under the moon and stars.
Course and Environment
The route is located in a high desert environment with elevations ranging between 4000 and 5600 feet. The landscape features local vegetation, surrounding mountain ranges, and open vistas. Due to the high altitude and the timing of the event during the night, temperatures are typically 15 degrees cooler than those found in the Las Vegas Valley.
Available Distances
Participants can choose from several distance options held during the night:
- 5K
- 10K
- 13.1 Miles (1/2 Marathon)
- 26.2 Miles (Marathon)
- 51K ultra marathon
The event provides a contracted bus service for transportation to the site. The course offers runners the opportunity to see the desert landscape in darkness and the moon rise over the Nevada desert. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
