Essex Challenge Series #5 - Upminster to Leigh-on-Sea
Essex Challenge Series #5 is the final event in the series, presented as a guided, linear route from Upminster Station to Leigh on Sea. The route covers approximately 40 km across varied terrain and is run at a steady 5 km/h pace as a Challenge-level hike.
The event is intended for experienced long distance hikers, particularly those comfortable with distances of 30 km or more. It is described as difficult and involves extended time on foot; it is not suitable for beginners.
Included with the event are a guided hike led by the Essex Adventures team, full on-route support, a provided kit list, and access to a community event group. Participants should carry a day backpack with water (2–3 litres recommended), a packed lunch and snacks, spare layers, and suitable footwear such as walking boots. A camera is optional for viewpoints along the route.
Logistics note: the start location is Upminster Station (parking cited at £6.50 per day or accessible by District and overground lines) and the finish is at Leigh on Sea. Because the route is linear, participants are responsible for arranging travel back from Leigh on Sea. Spaces are limited to keep groups manageable.
