Event Overview
The Elkhorn Relay is an annual team running event located in Eastern Oregon. The course covers a total distance of 81 miles and is designed for teams consisting of six participants. The route begins at Hilgard Junction State Park near La Grande and travels south along the Grande Ronde River via old Highway 244.
Course Details
The relay route combines paved roads, gravel mountain roads, and trail sections. After leaving the riverside highway, the course transitions into the backcountry for a section of approximately 20 miles on scenic gravel roads. Participants navigate through the Pacific Northwest landscape, facing significant elevation changes throughout the journey.
Key features of the route include:
- 80.6 miles (81 miles) total team distance
- A maximum altitude of 7,400 feet
- Approximately 6,000 feet of total elevation gain
- A final trail leg for each runner at the Anthony Lakes ski resort area
Participants travel towards the Elkhorn Mountains, with the course concluding in the vicinity of the ski resort. The event utilizes different terrains, requiring runners to move from river-level roads to high-altitude mountain paths. Registration for the relay typically closes in mid-July.
