About the race
The Elkhorn Relay is a six-person team relay around La Grande, OR, organized by Run With Purpose Racing. The course covers about 80.6 miles and includes roughly 6,000 feet of total elevation gain. The event begins at Hilgard Junction State Park and follows old Highway 244 south along the Grande Ronde River before leaving the river corridor to climb into backcountry terrain.
Runners encounter a 20-plus mile section of scenic gravel mountain roads, followed by climbs toward Anthony Lakes where the route reaches about 7,400 feet in elevation. Each team member completes a final trail leg that finishes at the ski resort. The event materials describe a mixture of riverside highway, gravel road, backcountry climbs, and a trail finish.
