Elk Valley Ultra - Fernie, BC
Now in its sixth year, the Elk Valley Ultra features a high-vertical 50 km trail course around Fernie, British Columbia. The published course lists approximately 3,000 m of ascent and starts and finishes at James White Park.
The 50 km route is described in three legs: Leg 1 climbs up and over Mt. Fernie, follows Rocky Road down to Island Lake Lodge and continues through an old growth forest. Leg 2 follows an old Rail Trail, climbs Gorby and moves through loamy provincial park trails. Leg 3 includes a climb across the front of Mt. Fernie and a steep descent to the finish line.
An optional combo includes the Headwall Hustle the following day. That 15 km route starts and finishes at Fernie Alpine Resort and has about 840 m of ascent, rising through Cedar Bowl to the base of the Headwall, traversing into Timber Bowl and ending with a descent to the finish.
The 50 km field is limited to 200 racers and offers Male, Female and Non-Binary categories with age groups 19, 19-49 and 50+. Youth entrants aged 19 must contact the Race Director before registering. The event provides fully stocked aid stations, finisher medals and awards, free race photography, a finish-line BBQ and a portion of entry fees is donated to the Fernie Trails Alliance.
