Elk Valley Ultra - Fernie, BC
The Elk Valley Ultra is a 50 km trail race in Fernie, British Columbia, held in its seventh year. The main course lists about 50 km with approximately 2,700 m of ascent and uses a mix of single track, old rail trail, provincial park trails and sections through old growth forest and resort areas.
The route is described in three legs. Leg 1 climbs over Mt. Fernie, follows Rocky Road to Island Lake Lodge and travels through Old Growth Forest. Leg 2 follows an old Rail Trail, climbs Gorby and traverses loamy provincial park trails. Leg 3 includes a climb across the front of Mt. Fernie and a steep descent to the finish. The published course distance is about 53 km and the route may change based on land use permissions.
An optional add on is the Headwall Hustle, a 15 km route at Fernie Alpine Resort with about 840 m of ascent; it climbs through Timber Bowl toward the Headwall and traverses into Currie Bowl before a descending finish. The Headwall Hustle is offered as a combo option for the race weekend.
The 50 km field is limited to 200 racers and includes categories by gender and age, including Male, Female, Non-Binary, <19, 19-49 and 50+. Youth entrants under 19 must contact the Race Director before registering. Registration opens November 1, 2026. Race services listed include stocked aid stations, event shirts, finisher medals and trophies, finish line barbecue and beer, free race photography, and a donation to the Fernie Trails Alliance.
