About the race
The East Center Black History Honor Run is a community event in Center, Texas, held at 806 Garrett St to observe Black History Month through health, education, culture, and historical preservation. The proposed 5K route leads participants through the historic East Center community, commonly known as "The Quarters," and highlights locations that have shaped the history and identity of Center and Shelby County.
Participants will pass seven historically significant sites, including three locations recognized with Texas Historical Markers. The event includes a 2K walking route to provide an accessible option for those who prefer a shorter distance. Runners and walkers encounter a blend of local history and community context along the course.
The event is intended as an annual tradition to honor the contributions of Black citizens of Center while promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and heritage tourism. An optional add-on available during registration allows a participant to request an honorary sign to be displayed along the route; the sign may honor a living or deceased person and include information intended for public display.
