Dragonfly Challenge
The Dragonfly Challenge is a six hour lap event on 6 May 2027 at Pooley Country Park, Tamworth, B78 1JA. The course is a mixture of open grassland and parkland pathways with mostly flat sections and a notable climb up to the Golden Tower of Leaves, a 50ft golden tower and statue located on the route. The site is a former coal mine and contains numerous ponds across the area.
The format uses a 3.3 mile lap. Entrants may complete as many laps as they wish within the 6 hour time limit. One lap is described as being just over 5k; a half marathon equals four laps and a marathon equals eight laps. Depending on lap count it is possible to cover significantly longer distances on the day.
Practical details include tiered entry fees: entries before 06/04/2027 are priced at £38, after that date £43, and unaffiliated entrants pay an extra £2. There is no booking fee. Parking on site costs up to £3.50 depending on stay length, and a cafe and toilet block are next to the event headquarters. Pooley Country Park lies on the outskirts of Tamworth, about 10 minutes from Junction 10 of the M42; the closest train station is Polesworth.
Additional notes: dogs are not permitted, rucking is allowed, a GPX route is available though the course may be subject to last minute changes and will be marked on the day, and entrants may choose a medal or an alternative Big Bear Tree Token which results in a tree being planted and includes wildflower seeds. The event has a partnership with Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity; during registration entrants may opt to fundraise or donate, with 100% of such donations going to the charity. This is the first time the six hour event is held at Pooley Country Park, although the organisers have run over 100 similar events at other locations.
