Dorset Hillfort Ultra - Maiden Newton, Dorset
The Dorset Hillfort Ultra is a trail ultramarathon of about 35.9 miles around Maiden Newton in West Dorset, linking ancient hillforts and coastal ridge lines. The route includes roughly 1,300 m of ascent and is mostly off road on old turf and tracks.
The course runs from Maiden Newton and passes Eggardon Hill (water at 5 miles), the old railway line and Uploders (about 10 miles), then climbs to Abbotsbury Castle (about 17.5 miles). The route follows an inland section of the South West Coast Path with a drinks station at Hardy Monument (about 22 miles), continues downhill to Maiden Castle (about 28 miles), then via Muckleford (about 31.5 miles) back to Maiden Newton. In total the organisers state about 35.9 miles plus optional detours. There are six intermediate stations and two intermediate timing points at 17 and 27 miles.
The route is on public rights of way with a small amount on quiet roads. Approximately 80 percent is off road and surfaces may be uneven, muddy or hard-baked. GPX files, maps and turn by turn notes will be available and marshalls will be positioned at busy crossings, though participants must take responsibility for safe road crossings. Water and squash are supplied at all controls and runners must refill their own containers. Cake and flapjack are available at every control; gluten free and vegan options can be provided if requested in advance. A doctor will be available at one of the later controls. Entries are transferable but not refundable or deferrable. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
