Dirt Duathlon : Adventure race series in Greater Wellington
The Dirt Duathlon is a winter adventure race series run as three mini events across the Greater Wellington region. Events are held in team formats of two, three or four competitors, with teams allowed as mixed or single gender. Races combine mountain biking and hiking with map-and-compass navigation and team tasks.
Courses use a clover leaf design with checkpoints (CP) and a central HUB where teams change discipline, refuel and continue to the next stage. The route includes mountain biking, hiking, navigation challenges, team-building activities and occasional surprise tasks that may involve getting dirty. Navigation is entry level and not intended to be highly technical. Teams receive one map per team approximately 15 minutes before the event.
Distances are approximately 20-30 km but may vary by course. The series comprises three events in June, July and August, with listed venues across Kapiti, Horowhenua and Wairarapa. One event is scheduled as a night race in August.
Entry information on the event materials lists a per-person fee of $80 per event, with a reduced fee of $40 for competitors aged 10 to 12. The series is presented by Big Bang Adventure Charitable Trust and aims to run multiple events across the Greater Wellington/Kapiti/Horowhenua area.
