Dim Sum and Then Some: The Uptown 10K
This athletic event takes place in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood and is organized by the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA). The race serves as a fundraiser for the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which provides social services to low-income immigrants and refugees, including youth programs, elder care, and citizenship services.
The event features various distances and cultural celebrations:
- 10K (6.2 miles)
- 5K (3.1 miles)
- Kids Dash
- Virtual 5K/10K
The race incorporates several cultural traditions from the diverse communities served by the CMAA. Before the start, participants can take part in a Laotian ceremony where string is tied around the wrists for good luck. The start of the race is marked by a performance from traditional Chinese lion head dancers. The course leads runners past historic Uptown businesses and follows along the Chicago lakefront.
All participants in the 10K, 5K, and Kids Dash receive a race shirt themed for the Year of the Horse, a finisher medal, and a race bib. After the event, a block party is held featuring performances by youth dance troupes. Finisher refreshments include dim sum and bubble tea. Registration for in-person and virtual options is available, though the event maintains a strict no-refund policy. Pre-race packet pick-up is held at a local running store the day before the event, with race-day pick-up available for an additional fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
