Event Overview
The Desmoid Defenders 5K Run/Walk is an inaugural community event held in Saint Louis at 550 Weidman Rd. Taking place during Desmoid Tumor Awareness Month, the event focuses on raising awareness and supporting research for desmoid tumors. This condition is a rare and invasive tumor type that affects five to six people per million and can impact surrounding tissues, muscles, nerves, and organs.
Participants can choose from several participation options:
- 5K Run/Walk: A timed race for participants.
- 1-mile Fun Run/Walk: A shorter distance for runners and walkers.
- Virtual DEFENDER: A remote option allowing participation from home.
Participant Information
Registered participants receive an event T-shirt, provided they enter by the early September deadline. For those participating in the virtual category, shirts are mailed following the conclusion of the physical event. A commemorative hat is also available through the event store.
The event aims to reach over 200 participants with the objective of raising funds for the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation. This initiative was inspired by Maeve Long, a young athlete diagnosed with Desmoid Fibromatosis in late 2025. The gathering serves to support families affected by rare diseases and to contribute to the advancement of medical understanding and treatment options for this specific condition.
