The event is held to honor law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. Revenue from the race is entrusted to the Hotsinpiller Foundation to provide scholarships for students and officers pursuing criminal justice education, support local law enforcement agencies, and assist injured officers and their families. Since 2011 the foundation has awarded scholarships and contributed equipment and direct assistance; to date more than $215,250 has been distributed, with 76 scholarships to students and 10 to law enforcement officers.

Practical event details include packet pick up on June 5 at Johnson Elementary School and on race day at the City Park Dogwood Shelter. Parking is available behind and beside Bridgeport High School and at Johnson Elementary. The 5K course has two official water stations at Simpson Elementary School and Compton Park, and restrooms are available at the start/finish and at Compton Park.
